What Is Counted Cross Stitch? A Beginner's Complete Guide

Cross stitch is one of the oldest and most beloved forms of embroidery — and counted cross stitch is its most popular modern form. But what exactly does "counted" mean, and how is it different from other types? Let's break it down.

What Is Counted Cross Stitch?

Counted cross stitch is a form of embroidery where you follow a chart (a grid with symbols) and count the squares to place each stitch on your fabric. Unlike stamped cross stitch — where the design is pre-printed on the fabric — counted cross stitch gives you full control over placement, size, and color.

The result? Clean, precise, and beautiful designs that you can customize to any fabric count or size.

What Do You Need to Get Started?

  • Aida fabric — the most popular choice for beginners (14-count is ideal)
  • DMC embroidery thread — the world standard for cross stitch colors
  • A tapestry needle — blunt tip, won't split the fabric
  • An embroidery hoop — keeps your fabric taut while you stitch
  • A PDF pattern — like the ones from Cutebroidery

How Do You Read a Cross Stitch Pattern?

Example of a counted cross stitch pattern chart — strawberry design

Pattern size: 11w x 12h stitches — finished size approximately 2.00 x 2.18 cm (0.79 x 0.86 in) on 14-count Aida fabric.

How to read this chart:

  • Each square on the grid = one cross stitch
  • The black arrows on the edges mark the center of the pattern — always start stitching from the center to keep your design perfectly placed on the fabric
  • Each symbol represents a different DMC thread color:
    • 2 — one color (e.g. red/orange)
    • 4 — another color (e.g. yellow)
    • circle (o) — a third color (e.g. green for the leaves)
  • The full color key with DMC numbers is always included in the pattern PDF

You simply count the squares on the chart, find the same position on your fabric, and stitch!

How Long Does It Take?

It depends on the size of the pattern:

  • Small patterns (up to 20x20 stitches) — a few evenings
  • Medium patterns (up to 50x50 stitches) — 1–3 weeks
  • Large patterns (100+ stitches) — a month or more

The beauty of cross stitch is that there's no rush. You stitch at your own pace, one X at a time.

Is Counted Cross Stitch Hard?

Not at all! It's one of the most beginner-friendly crafts out there. If you can count and follow a grid, you can cross stitch. Most beginners complete their first small pattern in just a few evenings.

At Cutebroidery, all our patterns are designed to be clear, well-organized, and easy to follow — even if it's your very first time.
